Baptism

Baptism at St Edward’s Church

Thank you for considering Baptism for your child at St Edward’s Church. Before we share the practical steps, we invite you to reflect on the meaning of what you are requesting.

Baptism is more than a tradition, it is a Sacrament, a sacred moment where God’s invisible grace is made visible. Through Baptism, your child is welcomed into the Christian community and begins a lifelong journey of faith.

Preparing for Baptism

To help you prepare for this important occasion, we ask that families take the following steps:

1. Attend Mass Regularly

We ask that you attend Mass every weekend for at least two months before the preparation meeting. This helps you become more familiar with our faith community and strengthens your connection with the Church.

2. Attend a Preparation Meeting

A Baptism Preparation Meeting is required and is held on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the church. (Please check the parish newsletter for any schedule changes.)

You only need to attend one session. If one parent is unavailable due to childcare or work commitments, we ask that at least one parent attend the meeting.

Booking the Baptism

Choosing a Date

Baptisms usually take place on Saturdays. When you are ready to schedule your child’s baptism, please propose 2–3 possible dates and times. This flexibility helps us find a suitable slot in the church calendar.

Getting the Form

Please speak to Fr. Gregory before or after any Mass to request the Baptism Registration Form, which can also be emailed to you. The form includes important details such as:

  • Your child’s full name

  • The names of two godparents

Please complete the form legibly. If handwriting is difficult to read, type it, print it, and return it to the parish house (not electronically, and not at the preparation meeting). This ensures accurate entry into the official parish register. Illegible forms will delay the issuing of a Baptism certificate.

You can also directly download the form from the link below:

On the Day of the Baptism

Please bring:

  • A white candle (a simple one from a supermarket is fine)

  • A white garment or cloth to symbolize new life in Christ

About Godparents

  • You must choose two godparents.

  • Both should be baptised Christians, and at least one must be a practising Roman Catholic.

  • Additional sponsors may be included as witnesses, but only two names can be entered into the official register.

A Sacred Moment

As your family and friends arrive for the ceremony, please remind them that they are entering the House of God. A respectful silence is encouraged while waiting. This is a time for prayer and quiet reflection for your child and your family.

For any questions or to begin the process, please speak with Fr. Gregory after Mass or contact the parish office.

We look forward to walking with you as your child is welcomed into the Christian family.
